Abstract

In August 2018, two male screaming hairy armadillos (Chaetophractus vellerosus) were born at the National Zoological Park. However, it was noted that weight gain had ceased by 1 month of age, prompting hand-rearing. Unfortunately, one of the infants succumbed before we had the opportunity to rear. However, the remaining infant was successfully hand-reared to weaning and continues to thrive as an adult. We detail the challenges and successes experienced in hand-rearing this species, along with recommendations for an effective hand-rearing formula.
