Purpose – This position is responsible for increasing Mazuri® Exotic Animal diet sales and market share.

Location – Virtual USA.

Accountability

  • Increase Mazuri® food sales and market share utilizing all methods of distribution in an assigned region.
  • Develop and implement a territory growth plan that aligns with expectations of Sales area.
  • Support event selling at industry meetings, trade shows and other events
    • Provide technical information, nutritional solutions, and training as requested for customer service, distributors, sales, retailers and end users.   This would include diet recommendation and answering question on nutrition and management of exotic animals.
  • Develops positive relationships with industry and university professionals.
  • Remain current on exotic animal industry trends and knowledge.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Animal Science or related field.  And experience in working with animals.
  • Travel is required in this position. The amount of travel will be dependent on the customer base served and amount of direct customer contact required. Range from 35 – 50%

Required:

  • Action oriented, customer focused, functional/ technical skills, interpersonal skills, drive for results, self-development, time management and problem solving/decision making. Previous field selling is a requirement.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lb. bags of feed as needed.  Fluency with use of technology to facilitate job responsibilities, including Microsoft Office programs, social media and other web-based technologies.

  • Experience working with exotic animals in some capacity
  • MS degree in Animal Science or related field.

The successful candidate will provide technical support to the Mazuri R&D team, Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Customer Service teams to support growth of the Mazuri® business.  This position will also provide technical expertise for assigned projects including investigating and resolving quality problems, assist with field sales and field trials, provide input into product development and expansion of existing products and may act as the technical interface between the company and the customer.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Product Set-up including formulation, developing labels, and regulatory support for both domestic & international sales.
  • Develop Marketing and Sales technical support materials (Print & Digital)
    • Product Specification Sheets which include diet analysis, summarization, and creation of the specification sheets.
  • Product Improvement and New Product Development
    • Help manage research projects with customers/partners
    • Coordinate research trials, samples & testing, manage data , summarize results & update new products and / or develop new products
  • Technical Support for sales, retailers, distributors, customers (accounts & consumers) and Customer Service
    • Providing Nutritional Solutions that include product recommendation and answering questions on products
  • Product development and improvement of products manufactured at Purina® ‘s Specialty manufacturing plant.
    • Packaging and labels for products manufactured at Richmond Test Diet Plant
  • Remain current on exotic animal industry trends and knowledge.

 

Requirements

  • Masters or PhD in Nutrition. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with exotic animals.
  • Travel is required in this position. The amount of travel will be dependent on the customer base served and amount of direct customer contact required. Position will begin with less travel, but could eventually average 15 – 25%

JOB TITLE: Contract Zoo Nutritionist

DEPARTMENT: Exotic Animal Training and Management Program/America’s Teaching Zoo

REPORTS TO: Zoo Operations Supervisor & Veterinary Staff

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Zoo Operations Supervisor, the incumbent performs a variety of nutritional support by developing guidelines and recommendations for the nutrition program at ATZ in collaboration with the Veterinary staff. It implements nutritional programs and standards for various zoo species, assessing nutritional health and recommending diet changes, reviewing commissary protocol and preparation, providing education and training to staff. The incumbent should expect at least two site visits, though most work can be done off-site. The entire diet review process is expected to take no longer than three months.

LOCATION SUMMARY

The Exotic Animal Training and Management program (EATM), also known as “America’s Teaching Zoo” (ATZ), is located on the campus of Moorpark College, in Moorpark, CA. The focus of the program is to train the next generation of animal professionals. Every animal in the varied collection on the five acre zoo is assigned to one or several students. The students are responsible for the care, training, enrichment, preparing, and feeding the diet of their assigned animal. The collection is about 135 animals currently consisting of 78 mammals, 30 birds and 24 reptiles.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Review data on diet consumption, diet formulation and implementation with consideration for nutritional adequacy, health, environmental enrichment and training.
  • Assist in development of protocols related to nutrition and Commissary operations.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate quality-assurance measures for animal foodstuffs
  • Confirm ATZ’s meeting of HACCP, USDA/OSHA expectations and standards for Commissary.
  • Conduct in-service training on nutrition for appropriate staff members

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the zoo’s mission and philosophy
  • Comfortable with application of basic nutrition principles of diet formulation and evaluation, software, and calculations
  • Good ability and comfort with computer software – specifically, Word (or similar), Excel (or similar), Outlook, PowerPoint, FileMaker and ZIMS.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of captive exotic animal nutritional management
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, students, zoo visitors and general public
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, must be self-directed

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • A degree in nutrition or a related sciences field is required. A comparable combination of education, experience, or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and ability required may qualify individuals.
  • Professional experience in nutrition related field, including research, laboratory, diet formulation, nutrition center operations, record keeping and zoo experience desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to traverse zoo grounds
  • Ability to exercise safe work habits in proximity of potentially dangerous animals and equipment

Zoo Miami is currently seeking an exceptional individual to lead our Animal Nutrition program.  We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that will be approachable, engaging and passionate in leading and developing staff.

Summary: Responsibilities include working with the Animal Science management and Zoo Veterinarians in monitoring the health of the animal collection with respect to nutritional status and diet consumption. Responsible for assessment of the diet and nutritional needs of the animal collection, body condition scoring, nutrition screening panels, diet formulation, quality control, monitoring diet consumption and implementation.

Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for developing, managing and implementing the nutrition program for the zoo collection including maintaining the department procedures manual, monitoring diet consumption, diet formulation, and implementation; annual review of the dietary husbandry protocols (including dietary behavioral enrichment items) to ensure nutritional adequacy of diets in regards to maintenance of health, breeding soundness, environmental enrichment and training.
  •  Responsible for approving all consumable items and diet changes; responsible for the distribution of diets, monitors current and future availability of dietary items; responsible for quality control testing for hay, fish, insect, meat (including whole prey items), grain, canned goods and produce.
  • Assists horticulturalists with the management and continued development of the browse program and surveillance of the grounds and enclosures for toxic plants.
  • Initiates and collaborates with the zoo veterinarians on clinical investigations and research projects as it relates to animal health and nutrition; responsible for advising the Senior Veterinarian on nutrition issues that require further investigation; will serve as point person on all nutrition research projects.
  • Feeds animals in accordance with nutritional and behavioral requirements as specified by curatorial and nutritional staff; administers medications; participates in capturing, crating and transporting animals; participates in approved scientific research and educational projects.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records and preparing reports as it relates to animal nutrition; responsible for conducting all commissary operations in a manner that meets or exceed AZA and USDA requirements; remains current with pertinent regulations and standards (federal, state, industry, etc) that may affect zoo programs, and provides recommendations for complying with relevant regulations.
  • Trains, coaches, mentors, and evaluates staff; provides ongoing, on the job training for Nutrition staff by providing written and oral constructive criticism and positive feedback to encourage professional development.
  • Works in collaboration with management staff to develop and implement training and coaching strategies that improve communication among internal staff.
  • Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; authorizes leave and overtime; evaluates and rates employee performance.
  • The successful candidate will have the ability to manage multiple and complex responsibilities at the same time; be timely and reliable in attendance and performance; and have the ability to work well with all levels of staff, volunteers, vendors and guests.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree.  Two years of experience working with nutritional issues for captive wildlife is required. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in animal nutrition and supervisory experience is highly preferred.

This is a full time salaried position with a salary range from $51,260.82 to $86,237.58 with excellent benefits as an employee of Miami-Dade County.
